   JavaScript is an extraordinary tool, but let me tell you that OPERATING SYSTEMS are DIABOLICAL, so what would I take for "auto" or "normal" as a result for a property JS-query ?
I was trying to acknowledge through JavaScript some information in order to analyze resolution related details, but I gave up and faced the issue EMPIRICALLY. In order to give to my visitors a page resolution that gives acceptable results starting up from 800 x 600 and being also good for the most used 1024 x 768 ...I have set my XPsp2 machine on 800 x 600 resolution and I have designed this page by holding all possible browser-bar as visible and filling this first page top-subsection like an egg for comparing it with my other pages of my notepad design-headings.
  This page is entirely readable in 800 x 600 resolution with 5 top-bars and bottom STATUS
Browser text was set as medium and no V-scrollbar appeared for this TOP page subsection :-)

    You can merge the systems if required or just use all the same this MASK if you are willing to organize your website with a LEFT or RIGHT navigation BAR
  Note : As this red bordered table sizes are set for an 800 x 600 resolution, I added the navigation herein by adding a CELL, rather than using the main place holder for V-Navigation.
Make your own calculation and resize the red bordered table WIDTH ...if you please :-)
You can set cellpaddings as desired, but you have to consider if that is really necessary, you will set designing borders to border=0
...in here for example it helps a bit :-)
If you want perfectly zoom-in 800 x 600, then use this MASK consisting of 3 rows and 3 cells in the middle row, as it can be seen by the highlighted bgColors herein used.

  Now media say that the most used resolution is 1024 x 768 . Of all other minorities in my opinion the 800 x 600 is the one that will zoom results in All the others quite nicely, so HERE we go with it...
As long as I see the bgColor #abcdef on top of the red bordered table I will be sure that no V-SROLL will appear in 800 x 600 resolution VIEW of this subsection MASK :-)
By designing the TOP subframe resolution was :
